Rickie Fowler is playing in his first major as a professional and making his Open Championship debut at St. Andrews next week. But it’s not surprising to hear the 21-year-old rookie is showing no fear. In fact, he loves links golf. And how does his game match up? Via text message he told me:
Links golf is my favorite type of golf. I feel like it suits my game well. I’m somewhat of an old school golfer and that’s what links is. [I] grew up learning the game of fundamentals and not using a camera. [I] just learned how to hit shots and make the ball do things without trying to put the club in certain spots.
Now let’s hear from his caddie, Joe Skovron, who said via email:
First, I would say it suits him because he enjoys it and feels like it suits him. That’s important.
I have never been over there and played, but everything I have heard, read, or seen on TV seems to put a big importance on shotmaking and creativity/imagination, which are some of Rickie’s biggest strengths.
It’ll be Rickie’s first time playing St. Andrews and he’s not heading over until Sunday night because he’s playing in the John Deere Classic this week. I think he should have withdrawn, but good on him for keeping his commitment.
