Thanks to John Wood, Hunter Mahan’s caddie, for sharing this funny anecdote from the WGC-CA Championship at Doral:
As Hunter was being introduced on Thursday, the announcer said, “Now on the tee, from Australia, Hunter Mahan.” Everyone had a good chuckle at his expense. Immediately after he striped it down the 10th fairway, Stewart Cink chirped, “Nice shot, mate” in a dead on Australian accent. Good stuff.
And here’s what he said when I asked him about the insanely difficult conditions on the 18th hole, which is living up to to its name, “The Blue Monster.”
We have parred it twice and I feel like we are whooping it up. On Thursday when it was howling, we started on 10, so after 18 we went straight to 1. 18, a par 4, was playing dead in to the wind and we hit rip driver, rip 3 iron to the middle of the green. Then we turned around and played the first hole, a par 5, and hit driver-pitching wedge…so it all evened out.
So, that’s how much the wind has been coming into play. Crazy!
Thanks again, John, and good luck to you and Hunter this weekend.
