Believe the hype? 20-year-old Wonder Boy Rickie Fowler is actually living up to it. After carding five birdies in the last six holes, including a chip-in on the 18th, he fired a 6-under 66 in the first round of the Children’s Miracle Network Classic. He’s one shot behind the leader, Justin Rose.
So yeah, Rickie is pretty good.
Only last month he made his PGA Tour debut as a professional at the JT Shriners Hospital for Children Open, where he placed T7. The following week he finished T2 after losing to Troy Matteson in a three-way playoff at the Frys.com Open. With those two solid showings, he earned $533,700, which put him at 135th on the PGA Tour money list. A top-12 finish this week would likely move him to the top 125 and save him a trip to Q-school.
And he’s in an excellent position to do just that. Three more solid rounds. That’s all. Maybe he’ll even do something crazy and, you know, win.
