The dismal news broke on Thursday morning that Conde Nast let go “at least ten sales staffers at Golf World” with little warning.
The company “basically gutted [Golf World] and [is] merging the sales and marketing team with Golf Digest.”
But according to an industry insider, the layoffs hit the editorial team, too — John Hawkins, an award-winning senior scribe at Golf World, was ousted after 12 years of star service. The source called it “shocking” and said Hawkins was “a powerhouse guy, well-respected and talented.”
Unfortunately, Hawkins’ fate reveals the grim realities in the shrinking industry. Who’s next on the guillotine?
