As you know, San Francisco is hippie haven and many residents aren’t fans of chemical additive products. When city officials saw a picture of Michael Jordan puffing on a cigar (gasp!) in the San Francisco Chronicle, they had a minor meltdown — smoking substances of any kind is prohibited on city property. Recreation and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg didn’t waste time alerting the PGA Tour that his Airness was breaking a very serious law: “It was sort of a gentle nudge reminding them that smoking is illegal and that we would appreciate their support.”
Perhaps MJ wasn’t aware he was committing an infraction. Wrong! In an interview, he said, ”I’m not even supposed to be smoking, but this was a practice round and no one said anything. So I’ve been very cognizant of that to some degree.”
Translation: I’ll smoke as much as I want until I’m told otherwise and, like, anyone is going to do that.
Stewart Cink weighed in: “He’s trying to set a good example for the rest of the people who see on TV what we are doing out there, just try to set a good example and try to chew his tobacco instead of smoke it.”
He’s got a point — dipping is way more attractive than cigar-toking. And golfers spit like camels, anyway.
It appears the ultra-liberal ‘Friscans aren’t putting MJ above the law. Wrong again! A city attorney spokesman noted that he won’t be asking him for the $100 fine that comes with the violation. So, go ahead and enjoy your cigars, MJ. And smoke a joint, too — that’s basically seen as a lesser evil. You know, at least it’s herbal.
