14-Year-Old Alexis Thompson Piques ESPN’s Interest
By Stephanie Wei under General

Alexis Thompson has been making headlines in the golfing world for several years now. Two years ago she was the youngest player to qualify for the US Open. And at her third appearance this summer she was in contention and T8 going into the final 36 holes — she finished 35th. Her best finish at an LPGA event was earlier this year when she placed T21 at the Kraft Nabisco Championship.

Yesterday, Thompson fired a 7-under 65 in the first round of the Navistar LPGA Classic and held the lead until Janice Moodie birdied 6 of her final 7 holes to best Thompson by one stroke.

Her performance was so impressive it caught the attention of ESPN — Sportscenter showed highlights of her round and did a live phone interview. Anchor Dari Nowkhah even went far enough to promote the Golf Channel’s coverage for the LPGA tournament. Progress! Or maybe it’s just because ESPN is buying the Golf Channel???
