Brandt Snedeker Catches a Terrible Case of the Yips on the 72nd Hole of the BMW Championship

[Warning: This is painful to watch.]

He needed to 2-putt from 13 feet to secure a spot in the Tour Championship. He ran the first putt 3 feet past. He yipped the comeback. He ended up 4-jacking for a triple bogey. Now that’s a straight-up choke.

Here’s how much money he lost with each missed putt:
1st putt: $97,500
2nd putt: $78,750
3rd putt: $45,000

No, it wasn’t about the money per se — it was about securing a spot in the coveted Tour Championship, where the top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings vie for the $10 million prize. A last place finish is worth $120,000. Not so shabby.

Unfortunately, Snedeker had a mental lapse at a crucial moment. He hit an errant tee shot on the 18th hole, so he had to lay up on his approach. At some point, he asked NBC correspondent Roger Maltbie what score he needed to advance. The answer was bogey.

After the round, he said, “I just yipped it…It shouldn’t have affected me and it shows you how weak mentally I am. It shows you what I need to work on. I just started thinking about the wrong things. I didn’t concentrate over the bogey putt.”

This disastrous blunder is going to haunt him for a while. I imagine he drank himself silly afterward and will continue to do so for the rest of the week. He gets a free pass. Cheers.
