Playing with Tom Watson I grow up a little bit because even if he doesn’t say something to you, even if he doesn’t give you advice, you grow up watching him. So it was great.

Matteo Manassero

The 16-year-old amateur from Italy finished T13 carding a four day total of 2-over-par — not too shabby. He was the youngest player in the field and paired with the oldest, Tom Watson (along with Sergio Garcia) in the first two rounds of the British Open. That was something to watch and it must have been an absolutely incredible experience for him.

As the low amateur, Matteo was presented the silver medal and subsequently Watson received the silver platter. It was only fitting that — in a way — they started and finished the tournament together. To see the wunderkind and Old Man Tom standing next to each other at the awards ceremony was pretty special. In with the old, in with the new.
