Tom Watson shot 5-under-par 65 at Turnberry in the first round of the British Open! He’s 59 years old! He is the co-leader in the clubhouse, along with Ben Curtis! OMG! Where did that come from? Oh, I don’t know. It’s not like he’s won the Open five times. Or 8 total major championships. And he isn’t, like, one of the best ball strikers to have ever played the game. Wait, newsflash! He has and he still is. He also took home the Claret Jug 32 years ago at this same course in an epic duel with Jack Nicklaus.

Can Watson muster up a showing equal to – actually more impressive than – that of the performance of Nicklaus at the ‘86 Masters or Hale Irwin at the ‘90 British Open?

It could happen.

[Update: Miguel Angel Jimenez dropped a 40-foot bomb for birdie on the 18th hole to shoot 64 and is your leader after the first round of play of the British Open.]
